“Continuing a Legacy of Community Service”

 

Equity in education, healthcare, and socioeconomic support in our nation, even in modern times, is not accessible to all of our citizens. The core of the 501 (c) (3) Groove Community Foundation, Incorporated’s task is to utilize its resources in support of The Groove Leadership Academy for boys.  In addition, support is given to those who have been affected by natural disasters and to fund other community service initiatives.

 

Data reveals that African American boys’ graduation rates along with their math and reading skills are still comparatively low. Data further indicates that their career development and social skills are on the decline. The lack of skills in African American boys are often correlated with families/parents or guardians who are unable to meet their basic needs in the areas of healthy food, healthcare, shelter, and clothing. An additional concern is the lack of access to consistent mentoring outside of the family home for those who are living in such environments. 

 

Acknowledgement of these needs resulted in the 2007 development of the Groove Leadership Academy. The Academy supports boys in middle and high school and is currently conducted in 12 cities with the expectation of additional cities coming aboard. 

 

African American men who have excelled in various facets of their lives can and must make a difference in the growth and development of the young African American boys. The Academy’s curriculum is designed to engage the boys through mentoring, in academics, character development, community service, life experiences in career choices, and setting goals that will assist them in reaching self-actualization.  Grants will be awarded to chapters with established Academies. The chapters are charged, in addition to using the funds to foster the curriculum, with awarding funds to graduating high school seniors to assist them in advancing their education.
